Reaper U: True Metallic Metals (D. Diamondstone)

In my experience, people learning to paint with metallics go through three phases. In the first, they do little shading (maybe some washes or drybrushing), and expect the metallic quality of the paint to do most of the work. In the second, they realize that metals need to be highlighted and shaded just as any other surface. In the third, they realize that metals need to be highlighted and shaded differently from other surfaces, in order to properly convey the look of metal. In the first part of this class, I will demonstrate how to paint metals the third way, using a combination of metallic and non-metallic paints. In the second part, students will try the techniques out while I provide tips and guidance.

Reaper U: Next Level Faces (R. Bender)

Basic shadows and highlights are the foundation of a great face, but there is so much more you can do to add richness and detail. One important consideration is the placement of highlights and shadows based on the direction of your lighting. Increasing colour complexity by introducing colour zones to the face and by adding non-standard colours into shadows and through glazing also greatly enhances the appearance of a face. Once those big picture elements are established, it's time to look at how to better paint details like lips, eyes, and eyebrows. Other class topics include a review of the elements of facial expressions that are determined by the sculptor, and which can be deemphasized or enhanced by the painter. We will be consider the painting of faces both for heroic scale figures, and for the larger faces on busts. Reaper U: Miniatures Photography (D. Sundseth)

The class will start with really simple photography of human-sized miniatures requiring little beyond a decent cell-phone camera. We will then discuss the use of more specialist cameras, including a basic discussion of exposure triangle, color temperature, depth of field, and composition. Finally, we will discuss how to make the changes necessary to work with less basic choices of lighting and background. We will also discuss post processing, both from the point of view of image quality and the ethics of retouching for public viewing and contest entry. If there is interest The post processing discussion will largely be from the point of view of Adobe software, but the concepts are transferable to GIMP or similar products as well. I do not plan to discuss flash photography at length. The photography in class will use continuous lighting for simplicity, but I will mention some of the differences required for flash photography. To participate in the hands-on part of the class, the students will need to bring their own cameras. Additionally, a tripod or other stabilizing support will be very useful. A handout will be provided.

This will be a hands-on class on various NMM techniques where you can paint along with John as he takes you quickly through several different styles and armor pieces. Bring your brushes and your palettes (brushes mandatory, palettes not) and a can-paint attitude. The goal of the class will be to have the start of good NMM on several traditionally tricky areas and not to have completely finished armor plates, as John would rather get through as much theory as possible, and is more than happy to spend time after the class helping you "finish" areas. The miniature will be provided, and John requests that you plan on painting it instead of your own piece; due to time he will not be able to help with a different mini than what is provided.
