First run in 1970, the Deseret News Marathon is the oldest road race in Utah and the 4th oldest marathon west of the continental divide. The marathon follows the path the Utah pioneers traveled when they first entered the valley. This event is truly a part of Utah’s heritage!

Packet Pickup

Salt Lake City Marriott University Park

July 23 - 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (no late registrations this day)

Online registration closes on July 20. *Late registration will be available at packet pick-up on July 21 and 22. You may pick up packets for someone else if you bring a signed note authorizing you to do so. At packet pickup you will get your race bib with timing chip, shirt and goodie bag. For the Salt Lake location, you may park in the Marriott hotel parking lot, enter through the main entrance and proceed downstairs.

*Late registrants may have to be sent a race shirt after the race

There is no race day packet pickup.


Awards and Age Divisions

All finishers will receive custom finisher medals. Award medals will also be given to the top three in each age division. The age divisions are:

11 and under, 12-14, 15-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-79, 80-89, 90+, Masters Division 40+.


Marathon

The Deseret News Marathon begins at the top of Big Mountain above Emigration Canyon, descending a 3,200 foot total elevation drop. The beautiful course finishes through downtown Salt Lake City along the Days of '47 Parade route where runners are greeted by over 100,000 cheering Utahns! The marathon course is USATF Certified and a Boston qualifier. The three fastest men and women racers receive: 1st place- $1,000, 2nd place- $500 and 3rd place- $250. Only Utah residents are eligible for prize money.

REGISTRATION PRICES:

  • Early - $60
  • April 11 - $65
  • June 1 - $70
  • July 17 - $75

START TIME: 5:30 a.m. - In accordance with the Salt Lake Police Department, the marathon course will close after six hours. After that, all runners will be directed toward the sidewalk and clean up at the finish line will begin.

TRANSPORTATION: Marathon Buses will pick up runners from Rice-Eccles Stadium promptly from 3:30 am – 3:45 am to shuttle runners to the start line location. These buses will be lined up along the west side of the stadium. It is your responsibility to arrive early enough to park and be seated on a bus in time to ride to the top of Big Mountain. Do not plan on driving to the top. The marathon starts at 5:30 a.m. After the race there will be shuttle buses at the finish line area lined up along 700 East of Liberty Park to transport runners back to their vehicles at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Due to the state holiday, the parade and the race route closures and traffic, these shuttle buses will take some time to make their rounds so plan accordingly.

BAG DROP: There will be bags and sharpies to write your bib number on at the start line location which will be transported to the finish line for pickup. Please do not use the bag drop service for valuables as we cannot guarantee their safe keeping.

Half Marathon

The Deseret News half marathon was designed with a PR in mind, featuring a gradual 1,600 foot total elevation drop. Runners will sail down Emigration Canyon along a gentle downhill course that follows the historic pioneer trail and ends along the Days of '47 Parade route.  While on the parade route, 100,000 cheering Utahns help push runners toward the finish line celebration at Liberty Park! The three fastest men and women racers receive: 1st place- $1,000, 2nd place- $500 and 3rd place- $250. Only Utah residents are eligible for prize money.

  • Early - $45
  • April 11 - $55
  • June 1 - $60
  • July 17 - $65

START TIME: 6 a.m. - In accordance with the Salt Lake Police Department, the half marathon course will close after five hours. After that, all runners will be directed toward the sidewalk and clean up at the finish line will begin.

The buses will be lined up along the west side of Rice-Eccles stadium. Do not plan on driving to the start line as Emigration Canyon will be closed! After the race there will be shuttle buses at the finish line area lined up along 700 East of Liberty Park to transport runners back to their vehicles at Rice-Eccles stadium. The Deseret News 10K is the fastest and most competitive 10K in Utah, featuring a gradual 600 feet total elevation drop. Runners will pass through the University of Utah's Research Park, descending into downtown Salt Lake City. The course ends along the Days of '47 Parade route where runners are greeted by 100,000 cheering Utahns! The three fastest men and women racers receive: 1st place- $1,000, 2nd place- $500 and 3rd place- $250. Only Utah residents are eligible for prize money.

  • April 11 - $35
  • June 1 - $40
  • July 17 - $45

START TIME: 6 a.m. - In accordance with the Salt Lake Police Department, the 10K course will close after five hours. After that, all runners will be directed toward the sidewalk and clean up at the finish line will begin.

TRANSPORTATION: All 10K runners need to get to Research Park at the University of Utah on their own. There are numerous parking lots around the area to park in, however as there is only one main road in and out of the Research Park and over 1,000 10k runners, be sure to arrive early to account for traffic. After the race, there will be shuttle buses lined up along 700 East of Liberty Park to transport runners back to their cars at Research Park. Due to the state holiday, the parade and the race route closures and traffic, these shuttle buses will take some time to make their rounds so plan accordingly.

TEAMS: New this year, 10K runners can form a team. After paying your registration fee there is a short survey to collect information about each runner. Select a team category and enter a team name for each participating runner. Teammates do not need to register at the same time; simply make sure each runner enters the same team name.

GROUP DISCOUNTS: Receive an instant 10% discount when you register 10 or more runners at once.

5K

Bring the entire family along to join in on the festivities by participating in the Deseret News 5K.  The run begins at the Wasatch Elementary School Playground located at 1150 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City and finishes at Liberty Park where runners will be cheered on by over 100,000 spectators!  This event will be chip timed so get your competitive spirit going and prepare to run!  For those kids and families who would prefer to walk rather than run, we will be doing two start waves, the first for runners and the second for walkers.  Everyone will be timed regardless of if you choose to run or walk and all finishers will receive medals!

START TIME: 7 a.m. - In accordance with the Salt Lake Police Department, the 5K course will close after four hours. After that, all runners will be directed toward the sidewalk and clean up at the finish line will begin.

TRANSPORTATION: Participants will need to park or be dropped off at the start line location by Wasatch Elementary School. There will be shuttle buses at the finish line area lined up along 700 East of Liberty Park to transport runners back to their vehicles at Wasatch Elementary. Due to the state holiday, the parade and the race route closures and traffic, these shuttle buses will take some time to make their rounds so plan accordingly.
