Kenpachirô Satsuma is best known for having portrayed GODZILLA during the Heisei period of the popular Japanese sci-fi film franchise, from 1984 through 1995. Originally a steel worker, Satsuma pursued acting at Nikkatsu Acting Institute, eventually performing in theater. By the late 1960s, he was exclusively acting at Nikkatsu Studios until 1970, when he moved to Mifune Productions, changing his stage name to Kengo Nakayama.
In 1971, Satsuma’s career as a monster suit actor began in earnest with the role of the “Smog Monster” in Godzilla vs. Hedorah, while he continued stunt acting in various television series such as Thunder Mask and Storm Cloud Lion Maru. His biggest break came when he was selected to embody the King of Monsters in Godzilla’s 1984 rebirth film, released in the USA as Godzilla 1985. Since another actor who was originally set to play Godzilla had quit, Satsuma was left to toil in the monster suit built for a much larger man.
Another milestone in Satsuma’s career came in 1985, playing the titular monster in Pulgasari, a mash-up of Japan’s Daimajin and the Korean legend of the ironeating Bulgasari, when the special effects staff at Toho Studios was recruited for the North Korean production.
Satsuma continued to portray Godzilla in 1989’s Godzilla vs. Biollante and throughout the 90s, during which time he became known for infusing the world renown character with the fiery spirit of a samurai warrior. It was following the monster’s final bow in Godzilla vs Destroyah (1995), which the actor considers his most difficult yet satisfying role that Satsuma retired from acting. He currently
teaches martial arts as a master of kenjutsu, a sword based discipline.
