William Kist, Ph.D.
Since he met Bob Keeshan (Captain Kangeroo) and WEWS-TV’s “Captain Penny” and “Miss Barbara” as a child, William Kist has been fascinated with the intertwining of pop culture and education. A former high school English teacher, Dr. Kist has become a pioneering researcher in the area of “new literacies”—a concept that broadens our notion of “reading” and “writing” to include not only words but images and sound. Bill has studied classroom teachers across North America and written about them in four books filled with ideas for integrating new media and pop culture.
A Professor Emeritus of Education at Kent State University in Ohio, Bill won the 2017 Outstanding Instructor Award (College Level) from the Ohio Council of Teachers of English. He has over 40 articles or book chapters to his credit. His profiles of teachers who integrate the arts and technology into their classrooms are included in his book New Literacies in Action (2005) which was chosen as a National Council of Teachers of English Select Book. He also has written three other books: The Socially Networked Classroom (2010), The Global School (2013), and Getting Started with Blended Learning: How Do I Integrate Online and Face-to-Face Instruction? (2015). Bill’s articles have appeared in such publications as Educational Leadership, Kappan, English Journal, Voices From the Middle, English Education, and the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy. Since 2010, Bill has also written 35 book reviews for the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
As a trainer and consultant for schools and districts across the United States and Canada, Bill’s clients have included the National Council of Teachers of English; the Institute for Student Achievement (ETS); the Delaware Department of Education; Conseil Scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud, Toronto; Atlanta Public Schools; Columbus Area Writing Project; University of North Texas Writing Project; the Cleveland Municipal School District and many more schools, districts, and universities.
Bill is frequently sought out as an expert by the mainstream press, at the local, national and even international levels. Selected interviews include: Variety, U.S. News and World Report, The Observer (UK), The Calgary Herald (Canada), Columbus Dispatch, Las Vegas Review-Journal, Hartford Courant, Racine Journal-Times, The Plain Dealer and Cleveland Magazine. Broadcast media interviews include: WCPN’s “Sound of Ideas,” and WKSU’s “The Regina Brett Show.” Bill has also been interviewed for such education trade publications as: Education Week, Instructor, Cable in the Classroom, The Council Chronicle (NCTE), and Our Children (the national PTA magazine).
An in-demand keynote speaker and presenter, Bill has presented both nationally and internationally including for the following organizations: The International Association for Entertainment Marketing Professionals; High Schools that Work; The National Council of Teachers of English; The Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquee (presenting in Ghent, Belgium); Literacy Research Association; International Reading Association; American Educational Research Association; National Association for Media Literacy; and the Pop Culture Association. Recent keynote addresses include for: The American Reading Forum; South Carolina Council of Teachers of English (twice); Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts, Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English; Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts; the Think/Teach/Play Conference (Teachers College, Columbia University); and the Ohio Association of Community Colleges.
Dr. Kist has stayed active in both academia and media-making, earning a regional Emmy nomination for original music and serving as a consultant for one of the longest running educational film festivals in the country: The Screening Room sponsored by The National Council of Teachers of English. He continues to make progress filming an independent feature film, Summer’s Journey.
Bill’s proudest roles are as husband to award-winning journalist, Stephanie Kist, and as father of Mariel, Liam and Vivienne.
