Joel is best known for his role as Colin Fisher on the Fox series Bones, and as Dr. Norm Spellman in James Cameron's Avatar. He is slated to reprise the role in the film's upcoming sequels, Avatar 2 and Avatar 3.

His first major role was as Owen Dittman in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, followed by roles in Grandma's Boy, Terry Zwigoff's Art School Confidential, and the independent slasher film Hatchet (Official) .
