John Beatty

John Beatty is a comic artist best known as the inker on titles like Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, Batman, Action Comics, Captain America, The Punisher, The ‘Nam, Superman, The Adventures of Superman, Action Comics, The Sensational She-Hulk, Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.E.I.L.D., JLA, and The Amazing Spider-Man.

Beatty got his start in comics by writing a drawing a short comic story starring the hero Crime Smasher for Tim Corrigan’s comic fanzine, Super Hero Comics. He later connected with artist Mike Zeck through Rocket’s Blast Comicollector, a professional comic zine. Zeck began sending xeroxed copies of his pencils to Beatty, encouraging him to ink the sample for practice and critique. After meeting AC Comics publisher and artist, Bill Black, at OrlandoCon and showing him samples, Beatty was hired as an inker on the spot. After some time, he began doing assistant work Bob McLeod like filling in blacks and erasing pages. Soon, McLeod let Beatty do background work once in a while.

In 1980, Beatty headed to MiamiCon to meet Marvel’s editor-in-chief, Jim Shooter. When Beatty showed Shooter his sample portfolio, Shooter said, “If you can come up to New York, I’ll give you a paid try out to work on.” In July of that year, Beatty made the journey to New York and, with the help of Mike Zeck, began getting gigs at both Marvel and DC Comics.
