Frank Brunner

Legendary artist of Dr. Strange, Elric, Creepy, Red Sonja, Man-Thing, Conan, and Howard the Duck

Starting as a writer-artist on Web of Horror, Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella, Frank Brunner moved on to his best-known work, Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the early 1970s.

Other Marvel credits include Howard the Duck, Man-Thing, Chamber of Chills, Red Sonja, Haunt of Horror, Unknown Worlds of Science-Fiction, The Tomb of Dracula and Silver Surfer. Brunner also adapted Robert E. Howard’s sword-and-sorcery pulp fiction The Scarlet Citadel into a 42-page graphic novella for Savage Sword of Conan.

Brunner and novelist Michael Moorcock collaborated on an innovative comics adaptation of Elric for Heavy Metal magazine. In the early 1980s, Brunner was an artist on the First Comics title Warp, based on the science-fiction play that ran briefly on Broadway in the 1970s. He then wrote and drew the graphic novel The Seven Samuroid in 1984.

Brunner moved to Hollywood and began a career in movie and television animation, working on projects like Jonny Quest for Hanna-Barbera, Euro Tomorrowlandmovie for Walt Disney Imagineering, Batman pre-production design for Warner Bros., and Invasion USA for DreamWorks. He was the head of character design for the Fox animated series X-Men.

The full-color Vanguard art book, Mythos, covers the artist’s entire career.
