LaQuisha Beckum

As a nerd, geek, übergeek, LaQuisha has always loved movies, cartoons, comics, and anime. She believes in the power of geekdom and within the classroom is not afraid to show it. When she started teaching, she realized there were different and fun ways to use these genres in class in order to talk about difficult topics. As a social psychologist, she uses classroom time to get students to look at themselves, process who they are at this point in time, then to look at their thoughts, behaviors, etc. toward other people. For example, LaQuisha teaches a unit on prejudice, discrimination, and racism, so using a movie like Underworld: Rise of the Lycans to provide a pictorial view of how these things work in the “real” world is one way to get students to critically think about course materials.

LaQuisha has worked as an adjunct psychology and child development professor for ten years, 2 years as the project coordinator for the Vasconcellos Institute for Democracy in Action, and club advisor for 4 Elements hip hop club. LaQuisha is currently working on creating a consulting business and wrote 2 children’s books she’s looking to self-‐publish. She’s also a contributing author for “Everyday Occurrences in Social Psychology” and works toward social justice within her community.
