Jason Ballard

Jason Ballard has dedicated his life to working on big problems at the intersection of human civilization and the natural world, most notably as the co-founder and president of TreeHouse, the eco-friendly Home Upgrade Company disrupting the field of home improvement. TreeHouse strives to make homes healthy, beautiful and sustainable, from the inside out and carries cutting-edge, sustainable products and offers turnkey solutions across all categories of the home.

In March 2018, Ballard co-founded ICON, a construction technologies company that is leading the way into the future of homebuilding by using 3D printing to make major advancements in affordability, building performance, sustainability, and customizability. In partnership with the non-profit, New Story, ICON has created America’s first permitted, 3D printed home in Austin, TX using a printer they named, Vulcan. The portable printer is designed to function with zero waste production methods and work under unpredictable constraints (limited water, power, and labor infrastructure) to tackle housing shortages in underserved communities throughout the world. The teams are setting out to deliver the first 3D-printed community of homes in El Salvador in 2019 where housing will feature cutting-edge materials tested to the most recognized standards of safety, comfort and resiliency. In addition to pushing the envelope on affordability, the 3D printing technologies developed by ICON will allow the team to make additional innovations in custom housing, off-planet space habitats, and leverage an open design platform.

Prior to co-founding TreeHouse, Ballard worked as a green builder in Boulder for two years and as an environmental consultant for ACRT. Ballard is a GLG Social Impact Fellow, serves on the Carbon War Room / Rocky Mountain Institute Energy Think Tank and on the Product Innovation Council of the Pecan Street Project. Ballard hails from East Texas and studied conservation biology at Texas A&M University. He is currently enrolled in a masters program in Space Resources at Colorado School of Mines.
