Dr. James Doty

James R. Doty, M.D. is a Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Founder and Director of the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research (CCARE) of which His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the founding benefactor.

He is an inventor, entrepreneur and philanthropist. As a philanthropist, Dr. Doty has supported health clinics throughout the world, supported groundbreaking neuroscience research and peace initiatives. He has created scholarships and endowed chairs at multiple universities including Stanford University and Tulane University School of Medicine, his alma mater. He is on the board of a number of non-profit organizations including the Charter for Compassion International and is the former Chairman of the Dalai Lama Foundation. Dr. Doty is also on the Board of Governors of Tulane University School of Medicine and Claremont Lincoln University.

He collaborates with a number of scientists in a variety of disciplines at multiple universities throughout the world on cutting edge neuroscience research focused on compassion and altruism. Dr. Doty is the Senior Editor of the forthcoming "Handbook of Compassion Science" being published by Oxford University Press.
