Most B.A./B.F.A. and M.F.A. writing programs do not allow genre writing in the classroom. While it's understood that traditional writing programs will focus on literary works, many writing students obtain degrees so that they can better themselves as genre writers and strive toward publication. When you love writing science-fiction and fantasy, how do you survive rigorous, literary-heavy programs that not only disallow genre writing, but often criticize it as inferior?
