Action figures, created in 1964 as a boy-gendered alternative to fashion dolls, have long been a site of analysis and conflict about gender. Recently, new offerings have begun to increase the offerings of female action figures for girls, blurring the formerly distinctive space as a boys-only club. Playing with action figures creates space for child motor development, for social exploration and for the experimentation with social roles and narrative outcomes for kids.
