Disney's Princess Movies and Cultural Appropriation

Thursday September 21, 2017 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Many of Disney's princess animation movies are western mono-myth stories set in non-western lands and cultures. Movies like Moana, Pocahontas, Mulan, Aladdin, and others often portray these cultures and histories inaccurately. It begs the larger questions of who owns these stories, how important is cultural accuracy, who are the gate keepers, and do mega-story tellers like Disney ultimately hurt or help promote indigenous cultures and stories?
