Join a panel of kaiju groupies for a discussion of symbolism and social commentary in Godzilla films, from horrors of nuclear war to the Fukushima disaster.
Long Description
This panel will be a roundtable discussion of Godzilla films and how they comment or critique issues facing Japanese society at the time of their release. Kaiju films have addressed many topics over the years, from the original film’s commentary on use of nuclear weapons, to “Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster” promoting an anti-pollution message in the 1970s, to “Godzilla 1985” questioning American military presence in Japan, and finally last year’s “Shin Godzilla” condemning the failure of government bureaucracy to help people affected by the Fukushima disaster.
The panel will be one hour long, and will require audio visual equipment for showing film clips as well as four microphones for panelists. No special seating arrangements will be needed. Please contact me if you have any questions!
