The Persian Shamshir is arguably the most iconic weapon in the arsenal of a Persian warrior. From the horseback to foot combat that Shamshir was a versatile weapon geared towards effective cuts but also very capable of delivering deceptive thrusts. This versatility made the weapon effective multiple combative scenarios. Manuscripts show and discuss the use of the Shamshir in both a battlefield and one on one scenarios. But just how was this weapon employed in each? This class looks to answer this question by exploring historical techniques that are geared toward armored and unarmored combat. Students will first learn the history of the weapon and learn about the sources used to explore these scenarios. Then, students will practice said techniques in drills. Finally if time allows engage in moderated, controlled sparring.
