Isekai, or “another world,” describes fiction in which one or more characters are transported by some means into an unfamiliar world. Isekai has come to dominate the wider genre of fantasy in Japanese animation and light novels, but its origins can be found in works published well before the isekai boom of the late 2010s. In spite of its popularity and longevity, the history of isekai is not widely known amongst anime fans. This panel will be a lecture-style presentation, the purpose of which is to describe the origins, evolution, and future of the genre known as “isekai.”
