Comics For Very Young Readers

Room LL21AB

Sunday April 8, 2018 - 10:30 am to 11:30 am

Young children don’t start out knowing how to read comics; they learn it, like practically everything else. And they don’t start out following stories about Batman and Spider-Man or “Captain Underpants” and “Smile”; they grow into them. Moderator Lee Nordling (two-time Eisner nominee of books for young readers), creator-editor Shaenon K Garrity (Narbonic and Skin Horse), writer-editor Barbara Randall Kesel (Black Is For Beginnings), and cartoonist Jonathan Lemon (Rabbits Against Magic) will discuss their different approaches to the craft of creating comics for kids who aren't yet fully versed in how the comics medium works, and, just as importantly, will discuss what kind of stories are more likely to appeal to very young readers.
