Robots: Helpful, automated friends or future overlords?

Room 211ABCD

Saturday April 7, 2018 - 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm

As we program machines in the real world to be smarter and anticipate our needs, some see utopia ahead. Others, the opposite. Will the machines rise up like in the Terminator films? Do the holodeck characters in Star Trek deserve the same rights as a human? And regardless of if we're all Replicants or Cylons, what does the way we treat AI like Siri and Alexa reveal about us, as individuals and as a species? If science fiction is to be believed, robots will soon revolt and overthrow humanity. But they might just tell you the weather in the morning and help order groceries.
