Black Holes: the Science and Science Fiction - with special guest Sir Roger Penrose, presented by NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)

Room 212ABCD

Sunday April 8, 2018 - 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Hear from a panel of scientists about one of the most intriguing cosmic objects: BLACK HOLES! Panelists will address such questions as: Why is falling into a black hole a once-in-a-lifetime experience? And how is that related to “spaghettification”? How can we tell what black holes look like, and how are we finding them in our Galaxy and beyond? And where did your resume go when it fell into that black hole at Google or Facebook? Recent research into black holes is revealing new information about time, space, and matter near black holes. Our panelists will fill you in on the latest discoveries in everyday language. Local astronomer Andrew Fraknoi (U. of San Francisco) will moderate this panel of black hole experts doing groundbreaking research. Panelists: Sir Roger Penrose OM FRS, Emeritus Professor, Oxford University, The Penrose Institute; Dr. Roger Blandford, Stanford; Dr. Ryan Lau, Caltech; Christian Johnson, UC Santa Cruz.
