Being Human in Space: The Science of Earth Life Off the Planet

Room LL21AB

Saturday April 7, 2018 - 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Even onboard a spaceship, living and working in outer space is difficult. Science fiction can make it look easy, but the reality of space travel presents challenges on all sides. The biology of Earth-based life can work differently in space. Lack of gravity, for instance, can make astronauts’ bones thinner, muscles weaker and immune systems less effective. In this panel, learn how NASA is addressing challenges such as microgravity, radiation and confined quarters for the humans, animals, plants and microorganisms that could make the trip to Mars. And, as humans strive to become a multi-planet species, NASA’s research in space helps people back on Earth, as well!
