I'd like to give a presentation focusing on this question: are the Pokemon games science fiction or fantasy? I have taken a literary approach, and will first go into the critical theories, some that distinguish the genres based on each other, and some that establish each genre on its own. I then look at how these translate into the context of the Pokemon franchise, and what elements might factor into an analysis of this question. Then I use the notions developed in a critical analysis of Pokemon Red and Blue, comparing the interpretations derived within each genre, in a sort of tour through the characters, story, and themes of the games. It is no surprise that each reading, science fiction or fantasy, provides its own unique reward. Also of note, this September marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Pokemon Red and Blue in the U.S..
