Reaper U: Next Level Faces

Classroom #1 Denton Ballroom (1st Floor)

Friday August 31, 2018 - 1:00 pm to 2:45 pm

Basic shadows and highlights are the foundation of a great face, but there is so much more you can do to add richness and detail. One important consideration is the placement of highlights and shadows based on the direction of your lighting. Increasing colour complexity by introducing colour zones to the face and by adding non-standard colours into shadows and through glazing also greatly enhances the appearance of a face. Once those big picture elements are established, it’s time to look at how to better paint details like lips, eyes, and eyebrows. Other class topics include a review of the elements of facial expressions that are determined by the sculptor, and which can be deemphasized or enhanced by the painter. We will be consider the painting of faces both for heroic scale figures, and for the larger faces on busts. Class materials include a special bust sculpted by Julie Guthrie, as well as a gaming scale figure. You will also receive a detailed handout with reference photos so you don’t have to take notes and can maximize your painting time in class. Please bring a good quality brush with a fine point. If possible, you may want to bring a battery operated light and/or magnifying visor so you can see and paint facial details more easily. NOTE: This is an intermediate to advanced class intended for painters who are already familiar with at least one technique used to paint smooth blends. (Ex: Layering, two brush blending, etc.)
