Fighting trolls: Creating positive online spaces for geeks

Geeks fighting online has become a trope. It's almost assumed that for every movie, news story, scandal, or game: there will be anger across Reddit, Twitter, Facebook and across the internet in general. But it doesn't have to be that way. Carrie Rogers-Whitehead runs Digital Respons-Ability which teaches students, parents and teachers digital citizenship, which includes communicating online. This research-based presentation will delve into the WHYs of online behavior, and include a facilitated discussion from the audience. WHY do we have trolls? WHY do geeks police others? And finally, a HOW: How can we all be better citizens online?
