Using Fanfiction as a Gateway

Miscellaneous Track - Panel Room 18

Saturday July 21, 2018 - 10:00 am to 10:50 am

This panel would be a fusion of education techniques for the high school level and a hands-on fanfiction writing experience. Starting out with a brief introduction on how fanfiction can be academically valid, the workshop will be foundationally based in the Common Core Standards. After explaining how different genres exist within fanfiction, the "missing scene" genre will be focused on with the goal of the workshop being to have individuals draft their own missing scene fanfiction. Given the options of: "Harry Potter", "Star Trek", "The Hobbit" and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, writers will be given a prompt through video format and develop a plot outline for their own missing scene. Writers will then break into groups based on the chosen prompt to gain feedback. Those who feel comfortable volunteering will then be able to share their work with the group. To finish the panel a Q&A will take place where attendees will be able to have all inquiries answered.
