The First Decade of Memes and Internet Culture, 1998-2008

Panel 1

Sunday September 16, 2018 - 11:00 am to 12:00 pm

How well do giant enemy crabs withstand attacks to their weak points? To whom do all your base truly belong? Memes have been part of online communication and multiplayer gaming since the mid to late 1990s, and this panel seeks to explore their linkage and discuss them in detail. Starting from 1998, we’ll go into the early use of memes as small-scale vehicles of authenticating one’s internet cred and trace their growth through the Newgrounds Diaspora to the Great YTMND/Ebaums War of 2005-2006; from Hampsterdance to Rickrolling and into massive upticks of V for Vendetta mask sales.
