Data Is your most powerful weapon: how a moddable hacking game can be a tool for digital activism

Room 204

Friday October 12, 2018 - 11:00 am to 11:25 am

[Speaker: Rich Metson] Off Grid is an extensively moddable stealth hacking game about this Patriot Act, Googling, IoT hot-mess of a world we live in. This talk will go through how you can make a game moddable so that it puts the power of discussion of your theme firmly in the hands of your players. We will discuss why as a game developer, you probably have less to say on a subject than your audience does, and why allowing your players to tell their stories in a dialogue is more powerful than you telling yours in a diatribe. We’ll take a look at what systems are important to open up to modding and how to give your players compelling tools for discussion of a political subject. We will explore how you can make sure you reflect an issue with the appropriate depth by involving yourself in the activist culture your are exploring, and look into how the Off Grid team’s involvement in hacker culture and open source communities has impacted the development of the game.
