The Auroras

The Aurora Awards are kind of like the Peoples Choice awards for Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror, except just for Canadians. They are Canada’s National Science Fiction and Fantasy Awards for professional literary works in English1, professional artists and all fan/amateur categories (There are twelve categories in total). The awards recognize the best Canadian professional and amateur (fan) achievements for the prior calendar year (January 1st through December 31st).

The Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association (CSFFA) is a federally-registered society whose role is to give out the Aurora Awards on a yearly basis. Eligible works and individuals are nominated by and winners are chosen by CSFFA members. Through the Aurora awards, CSFFA encourages Canadian fans to take an active role in selecting the best of genre fiction and related activities.

All nominees and the winners of the Awards must be Canadian, by birth or by permanent residence, as are all the members of CSFFA (annual membership is open to all Canadian citizens and permanent residents for a $10 annual fee).
