For decades, super heroes have followed the traditional male archetype - physically strong, masculine and dominant. Whether they are engaging in physical battles with villains or saving damsels in distress, male superheroes have largely filled the movie and television screen. In surprising twist, Jessica Jones not only dismantles but challenges those gender stereotypes. Importantly, Jessica Jones doesn't only portray strong female characters like Jessica, Trish and Hogarth, but showcases a wide range of male characters, like Kilgrave, Macolm and Luke, both arguably good and evil, with emotional depth and complex backstory. This panel aims to argue that due to these reasons Jessica Jones is a feminist television show, while at the same time encouraging open discussion of both opposing and similar view points.
