Don't Forget the Business and Marketing Components of Your Game

Room 203

Friday October 12, 2018 - 1:00 pm to 1:25 pm

[Speaker: Kelly Maguire] As a digital marketing executive who has just completed a 3 year process of developing a major indie title, I would like to propose a talk that focuses on the grind of developing a game from start to finish and weathering the bumps in the road while making sure to keep an eye on the business and marketing components a game needs, to make it all worth it. I believe that too many indie developers get caught up in their game idea and completely forget about the fact that people need to discover their game (marketing) and that they will need to make money from their game (business). In my talk I will focus on how to be planning for the marketing of a game from the very beginning and how to build a game with monetization and player experience around the business aspects in mind. How to leverage digital marketing, social media, and guerilla marketing to get exposure. How to research and identify business mechanics in other titles that might work for a game. Essentially, how to make a game that doesn't leave out half the equation by not forgetting about the business and marketing aspects.
