Programming 1 (Minoru C)

Friday October 5, 2018 - 6:00 pm to 6:50 pm

An exploration of the Victorian English ghost story, particularly those written by M.R James and British contemporaries (LeFanu, Dickens, Henry James, etc.) Focus will be given to the M.R. James ghost story formula as well as the often forgotten English custom of reading ghost stories for Christmas time, and their appropriately wintry settings. Other examples include Blackwood's concept of the unknown and grounding of his supernatural entities in nature, as well as discussion several English women's ghost stories (Nesbit, Wharton, and Gaskell). We will also cover the BBC Ghost Story for Christmas series and several other TV and film adaptations (Crooked House, The Innocents)
