A Holistic Approach to Becoming a World-Class PMO (Full Day)

Creekside A

Saturday May 11, 2019 - 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

The statistics don’t lie. The average PMO is not delivering IMPACT. A whopping 68% of stakeholders perceive their PMOs to be bureaucratic (Gartner PPM Summit) and an astounding 50% of PMOs close within three years (Association for Project Management). Gartner found that the correlated PMO implementation failure rate is more than 50% since 2008. Half of PMOs that start will fail. Ouch.

PMOs are the engine that drives strategy delivery and are responsible for enabling maximum throughput and the highest possible return on investment for the organization. This workshop will engage participants in a highly interactive and participatory learning experience and walk them through creating their PMO action plan to drive PMO IMPACT immediately.

Part One: Setting the Stage Business Driven PMO Setup and Management – a small change in thinking, an extraordinary change in results According to PMO research conducted by Mark Price Perry, the number of PMOs that are truly driven by business needs have increased in the last decade from 18% to 52%. While at face value this appears to be great progress, it’s really not. Why? For one, of the 52% of PMOs that are business driven, many of these PMOs, roughly half, struggled out of the gate and experienced PMO churn in terms of being restarted or replanned two to three times or more before finding PMO success. And for another, of the 48% of PMOs that are not business driven, these PMOs are at risk and facing the certain likelihood of PMO churn or PMO shutdown.

Using case study scenarios, survey polls, and role-playing exercises, attendees will learn new insights for ensuring a successful, business driven PMO and will be provided with templates and techniques that can be immediately used with the leadership team to start the transition to a business driven PMO.

Part Two: Maximizing IMPACT Portfolio Management 2.0 – the way it should always have been While many organizations have implemented portfolio management in recent years, they often aren’t seeing the performance improvements they expected. That’s because they haven’t considered the full implication of portfolio management. To be successful it must be fully integrated with other organizational approaches, it must incorporate all departments and business areas and it must expand far beyond just project delivery. It’s time for Portfolio management 2.0 which includes:

  • Idea capture to benefit delivery work and everything in between
  • Integration not just with this year’s strategic plan but with the long-term vision and mission of the organization
  • Financial and resource management through the full lifecycle of organizational investments

PMO’s are well placed to be the drivers of Portfolio management 2.0, but they must be built in the right way, supported appropriately and engaged with all the right business areas. Learning how to achieve that is what this section is all about.

Part 3: From Concept to Practice: Pulling it All Together Now that we’ve learned the ways to shift our own PMO leader mindsets and rethink project portfolio management, it’s time to dig into the proven system for transforming your PMO into an IMPACT Engine.

Participants will create an actionable plan filled with immediately applicable tools and techniques to ensure they are well-positioned to drive high-IMPACT with their PMO next week! Whether you are building a PMO from scratch or transitioning the focus of your PMO to be more business-minded and IMPACT driven, you will walk away from this workshop prepared to get out of PMO survival mode and begin to THRIVE!
