ED48 - Bringing Classic Literature to Life: Using Manga to Engage Reluctant Readers

ROOM 705 - Education

Friday May 31, 2019 - 11:30 am to 12:20 pm

In this panel discussion, a group of high school teachers will discuss how they enlivened and sparked student interest in classic literature (Great Expectations and Romeo and Juliet) by studying slight differences in the stories in various adaptations of the texts, including films by different directors, western graphic novel adaptations and manga adaptations. This panel will go through two complete units and provide tangible resources designed to increase engagement and help students practice higher-level thinking by analyzing how text interacts with art to convey an author’s/illustrator’s purpose and evaluating what truly makes a story impactful.
