Captain Marvel is the name of several fictional superheroes appearing in American comic books published by Fawcet, DC, MF Enterprises, and Marvel Comics. With BOTH an MCU and DCEU film releasing in 2019 placing competing claims to the character name, a brief exploration of the history of the name seems in order. Lawsuits over copyright infringement, copyright publication grabs, gender bends, race bends, appropriation … what’s in superhero mantle that so many want to make a household name? Members of The Colorado Coalition for Popular Culture Scholarship trace the name through all the twists and turns of history in an effort to decide once and for all, WHO most deserves the mantle of “Captain Marvel”?
