Make Literature Dystopian Again

ROOM 603 - Authors

Sunday June 2, 2019 - 12:00 pm to 12:50 pm

How do we navigate an increasingly disturbing world? What do we do when the books we read and teach seem less like fiction and more like a play-by-play manual? How do we express our own dissatisfaction with the world we see around us? Enter dystopian literature. With the success of the Hulu show based on the hit book The Handmaid's Tale and the rise of concerns in a #metoo era, dystopian literature provides an environment to discuss the flaws of society's current track in more of a "what-if" than a "but-see" manner. Join us as we discuss the advantages, disadvantages, and challenges that come from teaching dystopian literature and making a point through creating dystopian literature.
