ED19 - The Kepler Space Telescope and the Hunt for Exoplanets

DPCCP 5 Gotham City (STEM)

Friday May 31, 2019 - 10:30 am to 11:20 am

After 25 years of finding planets around other stars, astronomers have discovered that nearly every star in the galaxy is orbited by a system of planets. Much of the credit for this revelation goes to the Kepler space telescope, which has enabled the discovery of over 2600 planets using the transit method, which looks for small changes in brightness as planets swing in front of their stars. Not only has Kepler exposed alien planets, but it has revealed solar systems quite like ours—and the discoveries are still rolling in. Come learn about the Kepler mission, the space telescope and the legacy that it leaves for the next generation of exoplanet spacecraft.
