MORAL CONFLICT IN SCI-FI AND FANTASY

PANEL ROOM E24 B

Sunday June 2, 2019 - 5:15 pm to 6:05 pm

This panel examines how science fiction and fantasy pop culture allow fans to wrestle with difficult moral problems behind the veil of an alternate reality.

Examples might include the use of the Mutant X-Men to tackle difficult problems with racism and sexism in society, how we treat artificial intelligence in The Culture series, greed and power in The Hobbit, morality meters in games such as Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights, and alignments in Dungeons and Dragons role-playing games, just to name a few. I would run this panel from the academic perspective, but would be happy to host creators (maximum of 3) who have created some of these scenarios in their works.

Presented by Dr. J. "Cal" Baldari, a professor of ethics at Stratford Universiy.
