The Evolution of the Disney Princess in Pop Culture

ROOM 603 - Authors

Saturday June 1, 2019 - 2:00 pm to 2:50 pm

From Snow White to Shuri of Wakanda, let’s discuss how Disney Princesses have evolved, whether they are good role models, and what princesses we hope to see in the future. Disney Princesses are a complicated subject. While many of them are smart, strong, and resourceful, they can also be naïve, weak and the embodiment of negative female stereotypes and unachievable physical appearance. What’s a Disney fan to do? Come discuss with a team of Disney superfans how we can learn about our society through the lens of these pretty royal heroines. We’ll talk about the qualities of each princess in the official canon, how they’ve changed over the years, how they reflect the time period in which they appeared, what they teach our children, and our hopes for the sorts of Disney princesses we would like to see as this franchise continues. We hosted this panel at Denver Comic Con back in 2016 and it would be fun to have another discussion now since Moana, Princess Leia, Vanellope von Schweetz, and Princess Shuri of Wakanda have entered the Disney princess conversation.
