TECH HISTORY OF VIDEO GAME CONSOLES

PANEL ROOM E24 A

Sunday June 2, 2019 - 3:45 pm to 4:35 pm

Let's talk about the changes in video game console technology with a focus on processing, controllers, and ROM technology and how that changed the gameplay experience.

The section on processing will look at the transitions in gameplay from fundamental changes to processing hardware. The most major of these are the introduction of a proper CPU in the second generation and practical 3D graphics in the fifth generation.

The section on controllers starts with a look at the relatively varied early controllers with the basis of the modern handheld controller emerging during generation three and mostly finalized by the sixth generation. Recent generations introduced motion controls which opened the field for gameplay styles that previously required specialized controllers. This eventually congeals with advances in processing to allow for VR systems requiring highly instrumented controllers.

The section on ROM technology starts in generation two with the major change occurring with the introduction of disc technology allowing far more expansive games. The eventual transition to digital distribution represents a major change as patches and DLC are made possible.

This format essentially ends up treading through the technological progression three times over. Space for audience engagement will be made throughout, with time specifically allotted for questions between each section.
