Cosplay for a Cause

DPCCP 6 Coast City (General)

Friday May 31, 2019 - 12:00 pm to 12:50 pm

This panel will explore how individuals and groups use costumes to provide support to many causes, such as raising money directly for charities and/or supporting patients of all ages through hospital visits. These people in one way or another all raise awareness and funds for different kinds of needs through their love for cosplay. Denver Pop Culture Con hosts many individuals and organizations who live and breathe their love for the building and wearing of costumes, often times donning their favorite hero or villain. This panel will highlight a specially curated group of cosplayers who don’t just wear a cape or a mask and parade around their neighborhood; they join their colleagues with one common goal: using their love of costumes and pop culture to benefit their local communities. You might do a double take if you spotted Captain America or Darth Vader with a squadron of stormtroopers walking through the halls of a hospital. However, for kids suffering from a painful surgery or chemotherapy, the joy of seeing one of their favorite characters is an experience they will never forget. These experiences often have the power to put a smile on a child’s face when smiling doesn’t seem to be within the realm of possibilities. Parents also get a sense of relief, seeing their sick child forget about their issues for a few minutes. Each panelist will highlight their ongoing mission and how they use their love of costuming to support their favorite charity. Topics presented may include the creation and use of screen accurate costumes, a selection of incredible experiences that each panelist has had while wearing costumes, and how you could get involved in one of these incredible organizations.
