ED60 - Reel History: Navigating Historical TV and Film Narratives in the Classroom

ROOM 504 - Reel Heroes

Friday May 31, 2019 - 2:30 pm to 3:20 pm

This panel will examine how educators can use popular historical television and films as entry points for encouraging students' engagement with history. Though popular films and TV shows often take liberties with historical accuracy for a variety of reasons, they can help students visualize and begin to analyze historical events. Using the films "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," "Glory," and "Dunkirk" as examples for different K-12 grade levels, a team of history instructors, teaching assistants, and students from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs will discuss methods educators can use to guide students in building research and analysis skill sets that question "face value" narratives and facilitate deeper understanding of the events that continue to shape our world.
