ED84 - Represent! Why Representation in Popular Culture Matters

ROOM 705 - Education

Saturday June 1, 2019 - 1:30 pm to 2:20 pm

This roundtable discussion will explore how shifts in media over the last 50 years have introduced audiences to a range of characters and archetypes that were underrepresented in the past.  Despite recent strides in representation in popular TV shows and films, many people still struggle with why representation remains an important issue. This panel hopes to examine why and how audiences respond to the shows that represent them in new and interesting ways that transcend the underlying media. Using examples from Star Trek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wonder Woman, Black Panther, Supergirl, Sabrina, Sherlock Holmes, and more, a team of history instructors, teaching assistants, and students from UCCS will facilitate a discussion on what the history of representation in popular culture can tell us about American society and its shifts from the 1960s to the present.
