ED66 - Spectra the Laser Superhero: Spectra's Energetic Escape

ROOM 709 - Education

Friday May 31, 2019 - 3:30 pm to 4:20 pm

Spectra's Energetic Escape, Physics Through Comics: Spectra the Laser Superhero and the associated PhysicsQuest program combine physics experiments with storytelling. All of Spectra's superpowers are things that lasers actually do. As students read about her adventures they pick up some physics. Additionally, each edition of the comic has associated hands on activities for students. The students can really become the superhero they are reading about! This workshop will take teachers through Spectra's Energetic Escape story and associated activities. It will focus on types of energy and how they transform from one type to another. Teachers will learn about coupled pendulums, energy transfer in bouncy balls, friction, and pinwheels while helping normal middle school superhero Lucy Hene, aka Spectra, win tickets to see The Free Radicals in concert. Come learn about how to merge comic books with physics to fully engage your classes in both reading and hands on science. You can find out how Spectra and company use physics and laser powers to escape from the accidental death trap set by Nolan R. Gibbs (N.R.G.).
