What do The Princess Bride, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, and zombie horror have in common? All of them offer ways of making philosophical theories more accessible to students. This panel will articulate best practices for using pop cultural content and themes to teach Philosophy in the secondary and post-secondary classroom. It will look at the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches for integrating pop culture into the classroom (Philosophy and X anthologies, films/TV, graphic art, etc.), ways in which students can use pop cultural mediums to demonstrate their learning (e.g., writing fiction, role-playing, producing short films, etc.), and specific examples of where the panelists have used pop culture to effectively teach philosophical concepts.
