Crash Course in Language Construction

Riverside 2 (MR 14)

Friday July 12, 2019 - 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm

Made-up languages show up everywhere in fiction, from Klingon to Sindarin to Dothraki. Creating a whole new language takes time, but can be fun and rewarding, even as secret way for you and your friends to communicate! This panel will go over how linguists analyze human languages and give tips and examples on how you can use this real science to create a language that looks and sounds like something that could exist in this universe. We will be focusing on phonetics (sounds of language), phonemics (how these sounds interact and change each other), and morphology (how to build words). There will also be some discussion of syntax and linguistic evolution.
