Teachers have always incorporated pop culture into their classrooms whether to help make the content more engaging for students or to help students visualize what they are learning. But now, using pop culture is essential no matter what is being taught: our changing ways of reading and writing make it necessary for kids to be able to decode more than just words. No matter if you call it “new literacies,” or “media literacy” or “visual literacy,” pop culture is all around us, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In his keynote address, Dr. Kist will address recent trends in reading and writing and provide standards-driven rationales for incorporating pop culture into whatever subject is being taught. Students today need to have pop culture literacy skills to be functionally literate; they need to be critical readers and writers of all kinds of media. Being able to “decode” pop culture is fast becoming a basic literacy skill. Dr. Kist will provide many examples of lesson ideas drawn from his 20 years of research on the following: - Helping students become more visually and aurally literate - Teaching the ability to make pop culture allusions - Practicing critical literacy skills while “reading” screen-based texts - Using Easter eggs in graphic novels and film clips to teach “close reading” - Building “text sets” no matter what topic is being taught - Writing lessons that include pop culture in English, Social Studies, Science, Math - Using a pop culture memoir assignment to kick off your year You will come away from this keynote with many ideas for integrating pop culture into your classroom this fall, no matter what you teach.
