What Exactly is HARD Sci Fi?

Sometimes Science Fiction authors make up their science (midichlorians, anyone?) and sometimes they consult with NASA scientists to make sure every detail is scientifically unassailable; usually, it's somewhere in-between. This group of pro authors will discuss their writing and research techniques - and discuss what lengths they think an author should go to make their books entertaining and educational, while not including "facts" so fantastical they take the reader out of the story.
