Ethnic Diversity In Video Games

C-150

Sunday October 13, 2019 - 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm

This talk will examine the current status of ethnically diverse characters in video games, as well as outline benefits to having more racially diverse characters in games in the future with less stereotypes. Using Latina/os as a case study, this talk will focus on how games incorporate the cultures of the world while also investigating the way racially diverse characters are portrayed in games influences those groups of people in real life. This talk was inspired by Magnani's work in her Ethnic Studies class in her final year at BGSU; where she wrote a research paper on Latinos In Video Games. The paper focused on how society educates people currently about Latinos and suggests ways to educate people differently with less bias. This talk was also inspired by Magnani's 2017 GDEX talk on Gender Bias In Video Games, with the ultimate goal of both sessions being to represent people well and equally in video games.
