What is emergent gameplay and do we have more of it now than we did in the early days of video games? These are the basic questions Ohio University researcher Daniel Warmke set out to understand. He studied 12 games from Nintendo's history ranging from the original Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda to Breath of the Wild and Mario Galaxy to find complex gameplay coming from simple rules. Results include lessons learned for game developers and new ways to talk about emergence.
