Fluids are fun! There's something inherently compelling about sloshing, splashing, and oozing. For that reason, Exultant Games is currently crafting a game where fluid mechanics is a key part of the game's design. In this talk, Jason Conaway, CTO of Exultant Games, will explain and demonstrate how fluids are simulated and rendered in realtime within a 3D virtual environment. The first half of this talk provides an overview of how fluids are simulated with the Navier–Stokes equations and how fluids can be rendered in 3D using ray marching and metaballs. The second half of the talk will dive deep into the specifics of implementing these techniques with GPU shaders written in HLSL for a Unity project.
