On Earth, the wild west was filled with gunslingers, claim jumpers, horse thieves, train robbers, and murderous bad men. Will the Final Frontier be any different? Sheriffs, marshals, posses, and hanging judges enforced the law on the American frontier. Who will enforce the law in outer space and how? What current laws will be applied to astronauts as they travel between planets? How will colonists from Earth govern themselves thousands of miles away from any effective government authority? In matters of life and death who will be judge, jury, and maybe even executioner? Parallels will be drawn from American history, current practices in similar situations on Earth, and ideas drawn from sci-fi movies like Outland, Moon Zero Two, Murder in Space – TV series like Star Cops, Space Precinct, and Alien Nation – and novels such as Silver Star, the "Circuit" trilogy, Space Vikings, and Space for Hire will be discussed.
